Looking to the Future, Caring for the Past

St Mary the Magdalene, Great Hampden - Grade II*

The Hatchments at St Mary's are a group of five diamond shaped paintings, made for members of the Hampden family on their death. They were normally carried in procession to the burial and were probably displayed on the outside of Hampden House after the funeral. At some point they were moved to the nave of St Mary's Church on the Hampden Estate where they had deteriorated over time and in desperate need of restoration.

The Hatchments were assessed by Chroma Conservation. Analysis of the internal building environment gave a greater understanding of the causes of deterioration, and tests were carried out to establish the most appropriate methods to use. They were carefully removed and transported to the studio of Chroma Conservation for restoration. The following work was carried out:

  • Removal from the frame.

  • Cleaning of canvas.

  • Consolidation of loose and flaking paint.

  • Removal of surface dirt and varnish.

  • Filling areas of ground loss and repair to torn areas.

  • Application of non-yellowing conservation varnish.

  • Careful re-framing.

Once restored, the Hatchments were reinstalled in their original positions in the newly redecorated and lit church.
